Yes, I agree it entirely depends on what you want to do. I would say, for me, the best area toi stay in would be the Kensington and South Kensington area - not so far from the West End, and close to Hyde Park. You want to be able to retire to a soothing leafy neighbourhood after the buzz of the city. Try the Gore Hotel, or the trendy new Rockwell (although on a busy road, it's well sound proofed.) Or the traditional Milestone or trendy Baglioni for great views of the park, and proximity to, the park. Some great museums are also nearby, and also Kensington Palace.

There are a number of great neighborhoods in London, so it kind of depends on what type of experience you're looking for. If it's your first time, it's probably best to try for a central spot, i.e. in the SoHo or Mayfair area. Nothing in London is reasonable in terms of price, unless you are really willing to sacrifice a few of the creature comforts. Though it's not central, I love The Main House: The Main House for its charm and location in the neighborhood of Notting Hill.

No matter how long you decide to stay for, three things are a must:
1. go to a play in the west end. Reliable reviews can be found in The Guardian newspaper
2. get an oyster card for travel--it's much cheaper than taxis or paying per tube trip http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/oysteronline/2732.aspx
3. eat at a good gastropub, like The Cow (http://www.thecowlondon.co.uk/#http://www.thecowlondon.co.uk#) or The Engineer (http://www.the-engineer.com/)

I'd try staying at the Colonnade, my review here: The Colonnade. It's very reasonable for London, and across the block from a subway (tube) station that will take you into London's center in just a few minutes. I believe it is in the Marble Arch neighborhood. And it's just a fantastic hotel - best breakfast ever!
