Have to disagree with the others - Whistler-Blackcomb would be my choice hands down.

I've spent a lot of time in both areas, and just like Whistler. I like the village, especially The Fairmont Chateau Whistler, the incredible variety of trails, and atmosphere in general.

It's true that once in a while they don't get as much snow, but it's rare, and has never been a reason not to go.

The trip up is a great drive along the sea to sky highway and would take us about two hours. I would point out that they are getting ready to host the 2010 winter Olympics in Vancouver and there was work taking place widening parts of the highway up to Whistler. Completion of that work would be something to check on before going - I'd still go, just something to be aware of.

Well that's my two cents worth - enjoy wherever you decide.
Looks like Vail is the popular vote! Thank you for your comments.

I've lived in Vail. I've also skiied a week out in Whistler. Though you can't go wrong with either mountain, the safer bet would to go with Vail. It's very accessible through Denver International or Eagle County Airport. Vail has a tremendous selection of terrain and a cute European style town with everything from high end shopping to bars to great restaurants. More importantly, Vail's base at 8150 is high enough to guarantee cold weather and lots of snow! The problem with Whistler is that its a low mountain which can lead to warmer weather and rain.

I vote for Vail. Its a great mountain and a fun ski town. Whistler and Blackcomb are also fantastic mountains with some great bowl skiing and tons of terrain, but with the Canadian dollar so strong relative to the US dollar its not the deal that it was just a year or so ago. If you book ahead you can get a good deal on plane tickets direct into Vail which is another plus compared to the 4+ hour drive to Whistler from Vancouver. That being said both are fantastic mountains.
