Far from rotten in Denmark
Boutique, Cozy, Stylish
This is the first review written about this hotelApril 30 2008: There is no fancy restaurant in this hotel, but there is a kitchen, and therein lies the crucial difference. My favorite thing about this hotel was the kitchen.

Our first night at the Bertrams, exhausted from a stressful week and too late for dinner, we nonetheless poked our heads into the dining area, hoping for a small snack. Despite the fact that the staff was polishing the steel counter and all the tables were empty, the burly and rosy-cheeked chef (straight out of Danish Central Casting) set to work reheating his delicious bacon and pea soup, homemade sausage, and rubbing salt into two ginormous steaks. ("American beef is the best," he said, and who were we to argue?)

The hotel's stellar customer service continued: the following night we wanted to go to Tivoli Gardens for the midnight fireworks. Not only did the desk clerk loan us two bikes (normally only available for daytime rental), but she gave us her personal bike lights for the ride. ("You need to be safe," she said, and who were we to argue?)

The only thing worth arguing about was the size of our bathroom, which was tiny and lacked a hook for towels or a shower curtain or counter space. Still, by the second day, the eco-conscious vibe of the place had me convinced that the size of the bathroom was somehow saving the world. Not to mention the organic soap smelled nice.

Our room was also small, but a quite comfortable mix of modern and antique-ish, with a carved 4-poster bed adorned with shells and a flat screen TV.

The location is pretty convenient. That it's not in the swankiest of neighborhoods keeps the prices on the more reasonable end of the everything-in-Copenhagen-is-expensive spectrum.

Nice place for couples in Copenhagen
Boutique, Sightseeing
May 11 2008: I had a very nice experience at the Bertrams in Copenhagen.  It's a boutique hotel about a mile from the city center which is easy to access (15 min walk, a short trip on the clean buses or by bicycle).  It had a pleasant garden in back and the staff were extremely nice and helpful.  A receptionist even lent us a couple of her own night lights when we rented bikes one evening.

The rooms were fine; the beds were terrific but the bathroom was very very small.  I would normally expect European hotels to have small bathrooms but this was really cramped.  The hotel was quiet and to our great surprise and happiness, had an excellent restaurant!  Not only was there a nice breakfast in the morning, but dinner was terrrific.  Everything was organic, and the meals - which changed each night - were delicious.

Bertrams was a good selection, and I would expect the other two Guldsmeden Hotels to be very similar.
