July 19 2007: If you are travelling in the Southern region of France, Carcassone is a historic walled city that is well worth a stop over and tour. This hotel, which is affiliated with the best western (although it didn't have a chain feel), is one of two hotels actually located within the walls of the castle. The location of the hotel was the main draw, but we found this hotel to be very cozy and charming. It was also very reasonably priced, and included complimentary breakfast. The one drawback to the hotel is that it is very confusing to find and terrifying to drive into because of crowds of people and very narrow streets. Before going to hotel, make sure you get good directions. We drove around in circles trying to find it.

The Hotel Le Donjon is three stone built period buildings in the centre of the medieval French city of Carcassonne. The 62 climate controlled guestrooms, over three floors, have muted pastel tones, modern furnishings and original features. All are equipped with satellite television with pay movies, direct dial phones, dial up and wireless Internet access, safes, minibars and coffee/tea makers. Bathrooms have makeup mirrors and hair dryers. The Brasserie Le Donjon is set in a stone walled and serves local specialities, such as Cassoulet (a stew of goose confit and beans) and Foie Gras. A breakfast buffet is served on the terrace during summer. The hotel offers a combination of historic charm and modern facilities, such as wireless Internet access in Maison du Donjon, and air conditioning in public areas. Just a short walk away in a separate building, breakfast is served each morning. The bar serves a wide range of drinks and features a television, and guests can also benefit from a dry cleaning service, laundry facilities, and a safe deposit box at the front desk. There are three meeting and conference rooms with audio visual equipment and a capacity for up to 80. The hotel is close to many local attractions; the Carcassonne Tower is just 150 metres from the hotel, and the 13th century Comtal Chateau is only 300 metres away. Carcassonne Airport is 10 kilometres away, an approximate driving time of 15 minutes.
