This is the first review written about this hotelMay 7 2008: I stayed in the Doubletree Metropolitan for 4 days in last August on a business trip and I must say, my expectations met & then some. Having no history as a loyal Doubletree (or Hilton) customer, I did not know what to expect from either the quality of the rooms or the level of service from the staff -- both were excellent by midtown nyc standards.

Upon registering with the courteous desk staff, I was informed that I had been upgraded to a junior suite for the last 2 days of my stay and a King single for the first 2 days (I reserved a queen single -- the cheapest on the site). Perhaps this was just a good customer acquisition tactic to get me to come back? Either way, it worked! (I had a hard time chalking up the upgrade to excess capacity because it was right in the MIDDLE of the US Open!).

And -- as regular patrons are accustomed to -- along with my room key, the desk staff gave me a warm gooey chocolate chip cookie to put a bow on the whole deal.

Well played, Doubletree, well played.

With regard to the king bedroom/single : very nicely appointed, lots of sqft., plush, comfortable bed, and a chaise lounge chair in the office desk area. Desk & "office area" very usable -- its a really long counter top that spans from the top of the snack fridge to the TV...lots of space to actually do productive work on.

Modern upholstery, and a chic feel -- but not the over-the-top hipster vibe you get from staying at places like the W (where your room apparently comes with its own trance DJ who spins soothing vibes while you brush your teeth).

Overall, a great place to spend a few "work trip" days. As I mentioned before, by midtown NYC standards, the room was a damned oasis.

Which is a good descriptor for the junior suite as well. The suite was an open one-room format -- which, in my opinion, makes better use of the space than most junior suites that have the bedroom cordoned off from the sitting area. If you need the extra space to do cartwheels or something, I suppose this would be the room for you?

Overall, I'd rec this place to anyone who needs to drop into the city for a few days on a biz trip. Good walking access to upper midtown, and the hotel is right on 2 subway lines which can jet you to the financial district OR across town.

Good stuff.
