August 13 2007: The Hotel del Coronado is a classic. It's a beautiful old hotel in sunny San Diego and has been around forever. It has all this California history and brings you back to another era but the amenities are up to date. The hotel is huge and was packed with families with kids when I visited for a friend's wedding but we had a great room overlooking a beautiful garden courtyard. There are tons of dining options and the service was great, and the location cannot be beat in San Diego.

Location. The Hotel del Coronado occupies 28 acres of Pacific coastline property in San Diego, Calif. This famous hotel stands adjacent to Coronado Village and is five miles from downtown San Diego. Hotel Features. The hotel's refurbished interior includes an original birdcage elevator operated by a uniformed attendant. Dining options include 1500 Ocean which serves coastal cuisine, features the ENO Wine Room and hosts nightly live entertainment. The oceanfront Sheerwater features an exhibition kitchen and California fare. The Crown Room's focal point is an arched, 30 foot Sugar pine ceiling constructed without a single nail. Babcock & Story serves tropical drinks and fine wines, and features a carved bar that dates from 1888. Function space comprises 65,000 square feet and offers popular sites for hosting nuptials. A business center houses computers equipped with high speed Internet access. A health spa opened in January 2007 and offers 21 treatment rooms, hydrotherapy, steam rooms and relaxation areas for men and women. A fitness center contains cardiovascular and weight training equipment, and offers the services of personal trainers. Recreational amenities include boat rentals, two outdoor pools with cabanas and spa tubs, bicycle rentals, and beach equipment. Hotel staff members host children's and teen programs.
Guestrooms. Guestrooms display period décor in a Victorian building and modern décor in a second structure. Furnishings vary but include carved wooden headboards and wicker and cane furniture. Select accommodations feature patios or balconies, and shuttered windows that open to Pacific breezes. Rooms include complimentary high speed wired and wireless Internet access, Bose surround sound systems and flat panel televisions.
Expert Tip. The classic Marilyn Monroe comedy "Some Like It Hot" was filmed at the "Del." A collection of stories about the luminaries who have frequented this hotel is available in one of the hotel's stylish shops.
