I prefer a combination of activity (hiking, jogging, swimming) on vacation, relaxation (reading), and good meals. Small hotels are preferable to big chains and historical settings are ideal.
June 15 2007: Great value. A very nice hotel, walking distance from CRAFT, which is a fantastic NY restaurant, far less expensive than many NY hotels. It's modern and small, the rooms feel like a W hotel. Everything is well kept up and the service was great. I'd certainly stay there again, considering what you get for the money. Easy metro access. The only negative was they went a little far with "giraffes" - they seemed to be everywhere, in nooks, on the walls, in the carpet. A small price to pay, I guess.
Enjoy travel. Dislike tourists...that's what living in DC forever can do to a person. Favor unique/small places to stay but not so small that the owners want to introduce their kids over breakfast. In cities, it's all about being able to step out the door...right into the city.
June 14 2007: Hotel Giraffe makes for a nice romantic getaway. Good bar, helpful staff, solid pedestrian launching point. Didn't eat at the restaurant...obviously too many to choose from. Well appointed room with modern interior that works. Lots of choices in NYC...this isn't a bad one. i'd go back.
