Mediocre Kimpton experience

This is the first review written about this hotelJuly 11 2007: Hotel Lumen, across Hillcrest from SMU is a converted 1950s (?) motor hotel. Looks much better than it sounds and has all the stylish elements of other Kimpton properties. Property is 4 stories high with a fitness center and softly lit (or dark) hallways. Good neighborhood with plenty of shopping and restaurants within the immediate vicinity.

The usual Kimpton elements like the wine reception, big, big bathrooms, free wireless, free papers, parking is valet only.

However, the restaurant ran out of food for breakfast, reducing us to toast, coffee and some poorly presented yogurt; waitress had no guidance or answer for their lack of preparation. Room key system died late afternoon, preventing us from reaching our rooms without someone from the desk or valet stand letting us in.

Mostly it came across as a little too new (opened just a few months ago) and needs a little scrubbing on the service. I'm not sure a hotel of this size (48 rooms?) works with their model because it requires a high amount of personnel. Management was responsive to my concerns, so they seem to understand there is work to be done.

Date of stay: June 2007
