Historic inn that needs an update

This is the first review written about this hotelOctober 13 2007: As an alumnus of Middlebury College, I have spent a lot of time in the town of Middlebury and stayed in several inns/B&B in the town over the years, including multiple stays at the Middlebury Inn.  I have never been satisfied with my stay, but I keep returning because it is conveniently located, has availability when other places are full, has some historic charm, and has relatively  inexpensive standard/deluxe rooms ($140-200).  However, after my most recent stay I have concluded that the historic charm is looking more like old and run down.  They need to replace the furniture, paint the walls, replace the carpeting, and do a thorough cleaning.

The Inn is conveniently located on Court Square in the middle of town within walking distance of most shops and restaurants in the historic area of town and within a long walk or short drive to the Middlebury College campus.

The Inn is divided into three parts that all have different types of rooms: 1. the main building has a wide assortment of rooms that are dubbed "historic", but are really dated and run down; 2. the courtyard annex is more like a motel with drive up, larger, more modern rooms, but still dated; and 3. the Porter House has a few nicer, more luxurious rooms (I haven't in these before).  If you are looking for historic ambiance stay clear of the courtyard annex.

If you stay in the main building I would highly recommend paying a little more for a deluxe or even luxury room, as the standard rooms are too small for comfort.  The staff the the Inn are all very nice and helpful.

The room price includes breakfast in the main dining room.  It's a perfectly adequate self service breakfast with the standard fare of eggs, pastries, cereal, etc., but nothing to write home about.

The Inn has free WiFi, but the coverage is limited.  Our room was on the second floor of the main building and the WiFi faded in and out.  There are some desks and couches in the main lobby where you can sit with a laptop and the signal is much stronger.

If are looking for a more luxurious and romantic experience and don't mind spending a little more money, I would recommend staying at the Swift House (top pick) or the Inn on the Green (second pick).
