This is the first review written about this hotelJune 15 2007: The buffet breakfast is worth the trip.  The Peninsula is in a good location, right on the Chao Phraya River and they have free water taxis across the river so you can access the primary tourist and shopping areas of the city.  It will deliver you directly to the above-ground metro which can affordably and quickly get you to most parts of the city. The water taxis are also fun and a nice way to see the city - most are not as clean as the Peninsula's.  Their website touts their pool, which is fine, but not the highlight of the locale.  The atmosphere in the rooms and the main lobby is great, the staff is very kind, and everything in the hotel is luxurious.  The only negative is that the Peninsula seems to be built across the river to be seen - it's a lovely tower viewable for miles - but actually built in a dirty and unsafe part of the city.  It's too bad you can't walk on foot from the hotel, but instead must get on a water taxi to cross the river and start your adventure.  A bonus of the location is great views of the city and the river.

Ultimate Bangkok Luxury

July 2 2007: The battle goes back and forth between The Peninsula and the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok.  While The Peninsula has a more business feel to it, the Oriental has unfortunately become tourist trodden given its budding fame as the world's greatest hotel, and its standing more recently has fallen behind The Peninsula.

We had an amazing time at The Peninsula.  EVERY room faces the river and is of meticulous perfection.  The concierge is top notch and helpful in arranging cabs, tour guides, dining options that are off the beaten track, offsite activities, etc.  They even arranged quite reasonable packing and shipping of some bulky items that never would have survived the flight home!

The pool is great.  After a solid half day of touring the sites, was great to kick back and have a tasty serving a pad thai and a cold Singha poolside!

While it appears across the river from several other of the hotels, the hotel's quite-Thai looking water shuttle runs continuously and frequently.  Cabs are easy to get on either side.
