Historic Hotel with Old World Charm

June 19 2007: The Old Cataract Hotel was one of our favorite hotels on a fairly extensive trip though Egypt. This historic hotel has a wonderful character because it has not been fully upgraded and modernized. If you are looking for modern luxuries like flat screen TV's and WiFi then you should look elsewhere - probably beyond Aswan. The lobby and main floor of the hotel have tall ceilings, beautifully painted walls, and a general feel that takes you back in time.
The covered patio on the back of the hotel is a perfect place to meet and see the other hotel guests, as well as enjoy an afternoon drink.
Our room was located on the second floor in the back of the hotel overlooking the Nile. We had a large shared balcony that was perfect for relaxing and absorbing the beautiful views. Our room had very tall ceilings, but the floor space was not large and the furniture was a little dated.
The hotel has a decent pool that was very refreshing given the incredible heat of the desert surroundings. The main dining room is an enormous room with 2 story high ceilings and great architectural character. The food was decent, but not great.
The Old Cataract is probably the nicest hotel in Aswan. I highly recommend it.
