I prefer a combination of activity (hiking, jogging, swimming) on vacation, relaxation (reading), and good meals. Small hotels are preferable to big chains and historical settings are ideal.
June 11 2007: Good value. The amenities -- nice restaurant, breakfast included, pool, gym -- were great for the approx $120/night for two. Not accessible to other parts of Guatemala City except by car, but that's because it's on a hill with nice views. Excellent service - the staff was very polite, happy to speak Spanish or English.

Enjoy travel. Dislike tourists...that's what living in DC forever can do to a person. Favor unique/small places to stay but not so small that the owners want to introduce their kids over breakfast. In cities, it's all about being able to step out the door...right into the city.

June 13 2007: This hotel sits away from downtown...my wife and I stayed here to visit a child we are adopting. The room was clean, the food was good (but not extraordinary) and service was of a business class. The grounds were well kept though walking off the grounds of the hotel was virtually impossible. It rests on a major road leading in and out of the city. For a person most comfortable in an urban/pedestrian setting, it was a little discomforting. But...perfect for our intended purpose of having a calm and professionally managed hotel in which to spend a few nights with our future son. We were happy not to be in a global chain.
