June 15 2007: So we decided on a whim to take our bikes on the train to the Dutch island of Texel on day in April 2007. We wanted to stay overnight, but didn't book ahead. So we biked from the ferry to De Koog, and wandered into the 4 star Hotel Greenside. Usually in the Netherlands a 4 star hotel is like a North American three star but this was a surprisingly good experience, You need to ignore the outside of the building, its a fairly ugly, plain and faded, but if you can get past that here is what is inside:1. The suite we stayed in was very clean, newly decorated and spacious, It had a couch and beautiful Philips Flat panel TV. When we got ini the room they had a DVD set out on all the things you could do on the island. We watched this and it gave us some great ideas... They also had a good selection of free DVDs at the counter.
2. It had a freaking NESCAFE Dolce Gusto machine in the room. If you have ever had coffee from this machine you know what I'm talking about!
3. Check out the pictures I uploaded for this hotel. It actually had this kind of crazy wireless digital weather display on the wall. The screen tells you the current weather inside and out, and when the sunsets and rises. We actually used this to time our walk on the beach so we could see the sun set :-).
4. The restaurant and bar is really superb. The staff are unbelievably friendly. You don't usually get that here.... We got a little story with everything we ordered. When we ordered a beer at the bar, the bar tender took the time to explain how the local Texel beer was brewed. And when we had dinner they explained where everything came from on the island. I.e. "this is 9th month old lamb, coming from such and such farm"
Such a beautiful island I recommend visiting and staying at Hotel Greenside in one of there suites.....
