December 20 2007: Bergen is a beautiful place with it’s harbor, restored buildings, and picturesque waterfront. The hotel sits right in the middle of all that adding its own distinct charm. In fact the whole area here looks like a giant photo opportunity.

The hotel was great. My room was a bit larger than expected, which was a pleasant surprise, and quite comfortable. The view was to the street outside and wasn’t at all noisy. The furnishings were tasteful.

I will admit to being spoiled and preferring king-sized beds, but I still found this one to my liking. In fact, I’m not completely sure of its actual size, but it worked fine. The bedding in particular was extraordinarily plush. Maybe that’s what overcame the smaller size.

There are shops all around, and lots of places for walking and taking in the history in the surroundings. The fish market is not very far, and all along the docks are good choices for getting something to eat. We tried several, and I always had some type of seafood. You just can’t be here and not eat the seafood – at least I can’t.

I had a little free time to enjoy the city, but as this was a business trip, not as much as I would’ve liked. I’d certainly stay here again if the opportunity presented itself for a return leisure trip.

The Radisson SAS Royal Hotel is a red brick hotel situated on the picturesque 18th century Bryggen harbour waterfront, 500 metres from the Bergen fish market. This five floor hotel features 273 guestrooms furnished in a Scandinavian style, all of which include satellite television with pay movies, multi line phones with voicemail, wireless Internet, climate control, and minibars. Private bathrooms have telephones and hair dryers.
After breakfast guests can make use of the facilities at the hotel's health club, including an indoor pool, sauna, and hot tub. Business guests benefit from 17 meeting rooms and a business centre, and those arriving by car will find garage parking facilities available (surcharge). Multilingual staff on the 24 hour front desk can assist with currency exchange and provide information on local tourist attractions. After a day of sightseeing, guests can mingle with locals in the Engelsen Night Club or enjoy a quiet drink in the Beffen Bar. The hotel has a choice of dining options, including Café Royal, an á la carte restaurant serving international and Scandinavian dishes, and Madame Felle which serves light meals in a relaxed, pub like atmosphere and opens onto an outdoor promenade during summer months. Guests wishing to explore their surroundings will find the funicular leading up to Mount Floyen 500 metres away. Mount Ulriken, which offers impressive views of the local area, is two kilometres from the hotel. Bergen Flesland Airport is 21 kilometres away and takes around 30 minutes by car.
