Enjoy travel. Dislike tourists...that's what living in DC forever can do to a person. Favor unique/small places to stay but not so small that the owners want to introduce their kids over breakfast. In cities, it's all about being able to step out the door...right into the city.
June 14 2007: Lake Wanaka is another beautiful spot on the South Island. There are a few places to spend (infinitely) more money nearby, but if you want simple comfort, excellent amenities and instant access to mountains, next to a lake, a walk to what amounts to a mellow Colorado ski town, this is a good place. Scandinavian inspiration in architecture. Mountain bikes you can borrow. Near to the Rob Roy Glacier (see: hikes galore). All good. Owners are helpful and friendly. You'll be eating in town, but who cares.
