My wife and I travel the globe and enjoy destinations and accomadations ranging from the simplest bungalow to the swankiest, posh place we can find. We particularly enjoy cuisine, especially local and organic fare. Eco and low impact travel destinations are high on our list.
November 1 2007: We spent about a week of our honeymoon at this hotel. We actually got bullied into scheduling our stay here after a day of wine tasting with some friends in Sonoma. They spent a weekend here and said we had to stay here on our honeymoon or else...They were definitely right. This is such a romantic and unique spot. Big Sur is an incredibly beautiful are of coastline off highway one in California. The inn is comprised of individual cottages that hang off the cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From every room in our cottage you had an unobstructed view of the coastline. The entire resort is made of reclaimed red wood and the landscape is all local, native species. There are two soaking pools (read large jacuzzis) hanging off the cliffs and an incredible restaurant. There are a lot of on property activites geared toward relaxation - yoga, spa, shaman rituals, hiking - or you can venture out to the galleries of Big Sur and Carmel if you get bored. We didn't really leave our room the entire trip except to trek over to the spa or down to the pools and yoga yurt. This place is as close to perfect as you can get. The only negative is that it is very expensive and the there is only one restaurant on site which is very expensive as well. There are a lot of wonderful restaurants nearby and the hotel will let you use their complimentary lexus convertibles if you feel like a coastal drive. Definitely opt for the spa treatments in your room as the spa is pretty cramped. When we were there they were in the process of building more guest rooms and a larger spa. I hope the new buildings don't detract from the idyllic spot.
