Another enjoyable stay at the W

August 18 2008: In town for Comic Con so most hotels were booked and jacked up rates for the weekend - fortunately I was able to score a decent rate and a nice corner room. I had stayed here about 5 years ago and it was just as great so the service and food has sustained it's reputation and high praise.

A stylish and hip hotel like the rest of the W hotels - in a decent location downtown. The clean, bright cheerful room offers the usual great amenities: LCD screen, dvd/cd player, cozy feather bed and nice linens. The bed was yummy. Separate shower/tub. Well stocked minibar which we refrained from since a bottle water cost 10 buckaroos. Bliss beauty products that are replenished daily. Cordless phone which I always appreciate. The hotel is beautiful. Lobby bar is stylish and a nice place to chill and sip cocktails. My favorite is the rooftop beach bar. Sand between your toes and cozy cabanas and mean mojitos :)

The food is really good and reasonably priced. Thursdays and Fridays draws the business/yuppie crowd so come 5pm the lobby bar and rooftop is hopping. The fitness center is nice and looked very clean. The spa was beautiful but did not indulge in any treatments. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Oh I forgot - there is a Starbucks in the hotel which was convenient and cheaper than the hotel's coffee :)

Only complaint which is always expected downtown is the parking - you can valet for a very high fee.

A great, lively hotel and will def stay here again.

A fun time in San Diego

July 17 2008: This hotel is a little on the pricey side but if you enjoy a good downtown party scene, it's worth it. The service is outstanding and the rooms are nice. Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby area but not in rooms.

The location is convenient -- walking distance to everthing in the Gaslamp district and to the San Diego Bay. It's just a short trip over the bridge or by ferry to Coronado, which is worth checking out. The airport and rental car offices are close by.

If you're looking for a quiet, laid back place, this probably isn't for you, but if you like nightlife, it's tough to beat. The rooftop bar is one of the more popular night spots in town. The sand floor up there is a nice touch, but doesn't seem too popular with women in high heels. Also, on certain nights, the lobby imports a DJ and turns into a dance club for which a line forms around the block (as a hotel guest, of course, there is no wait).

I don't recall there being a restaurant there, but they do have this "Whatever, Whenever" thing, whereby they will apparently procure anything you want and deliver it to your room for some astronomical price. I did not try this out but was very intrigued by it.

If you're heading to San Diego and are looking to have a lot of fun, this is a good choice.

Location. The ultra modern W San Diego hotel is located in downtown San Diego, Calif. This property stands three blocks from Little Italy, four blocks from San Diego Bay and eight blocks from the Gaslamp Quarter.
Hotel Features. The hotel lobby features post modern décor, dramatic lighting, bay window seats and 18 plasma monitors hung above the bar that project sunsets, the northern lights and landscape scenes. The hotel's restaurant, RICE, creates Pacific Asian cuisine and serves breakfasts, lunches and dinners. A privacy brick wall secludes the restaurant's street front outdoor terrace. Five function rooms encompass 5,000 square feet of space. Limited hour Town Car transportation is offered in the downtown area based upon availability. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available in the W Living Room. A business center houses two computers equipped with high speed Internet access. Away Spa offers holistic facials, body treatments, massage and skin care services. Treatments include aromatherapy and season oriented wraps that include the Fall Pumpkin Cream Body Wrap and warm vanilla cream soufflé massage. SWEAT Fitness Center contains cardiovascular and strength training equipment, and offers personal training instruction. An outdoor pool is surrounded by the indoor/outdoor Veranda lounge.

Guestrooms. This hotel offers 261 guestrooms located in a 19 story building. Beds are outfitted with pillowtop mattresses, 350 thread count sheets and down comforters. Bay windows are padded with thick cushions. Rooms include flat screen televisions, CD and DVD players, and high speed wired and wireless Internet access for a fee. Bathrooms feature marble vanities with square sinks, Bliss bath products, and glass enclosed shower stalls. W hotel's dog treatments include turndown treats, dog beds and a gift bag that contains a pet toy, a treat and a bone.

Expert Tip. Hotel guests receive priority entry into the Beach Bar located on the hotel's roof. The bar features a fire pit, a heated sand floor, cabanas, and upholstered and heated concrete benches.
