FROM

The location is great -- right on the edge of Union Square and close to plenty of shopping and restaurants. However, the hotel is located on a hill, which makes the entrance a little awkward (enter on lower level, take elevator up to lobby, then up to rooms). Housekeeping did a great job keeping everything in order.
The rooms themselves were big for downtown San Francisco and equipped with a flat screen LCD. The bathroom was equally as big, with separate tub and shower, although the plethora of mirrors in the bathroom is slightly awkward. The rooms all face out to an open atrium, which actually helps with noise. I found my room to be rather quiet, as you don't get the typical noise from an enclosed hallway. Also, my room has a long foyer that kept any hallway noises at a distance.
There is a small to medium sized gym downstairs, which I found slightly above average. Decent selection of cardio machines, although I wish there were more strength conditioning equipment. Comes with free towels and bottled water. However, it doesn't quite compare to the gyms at the nearby Hilton or Marriott -- but this hotel is much smaller than either of those two (which can be good if that's what you like).
Overall, the JW Marriott is a good choice for downtown San Francisco, primarily because of the room sizes and location. However, I still prefer the Marriott on 4th better because it's a little more modern and I think it's location is slightly better. Also, for being a "JW" Marriott, it didn't feel THAT much more upscale.
