One of the better options in downtown San Francisco

December 27 2007: I have stayed at the Marriott San Francisco a few times on business and it has made my list as one of my preferred downtown SF hotels and I'd be happy to stay there for business or pleasure. Location -- Fantastic location for either business or pleasure. It's located right next to the Moscone Convention Center, but just a few blocks away from the heart of Union Square. Easily walkable to the BART station too. There are also several food options nearby - including a small food court next door, a 24 hour diner across the street, and several convenience stores. Oh, and my favorite Beard Papa cream puff store is also next door, so I can get my fix when I'm away from NYC. Lobby -- Modern and businesslike, but not too overwhelming for a hotel of this size. Rooms -- On the small side, but that's what you get in downtown San Francisco. They are still larger than the tiny rooms at the Hilton on O'Farrell St. They have also been recently renovated with modern decor and each room comes with a 32" LCD TV, with a media input center for you to plug in your iPod, laptop, etc. I found the hallways to be fairly quiet and peaceful. Bathrooms were a decent size for this location. Amenities -- The hotel gym is fairly large (not quite as nice as the one at the Hilton), but I was impressed. There's a great bar on the top floor with amazing views of all of San Francisco -- I highly recommend grabbing a drink up there. Overall, I would definitley stay here again. It's got a great combination of location, modern decor, decent enough space, and nice amenities. For comparison, I've stayed at the Hilton, Westin St. Francis, and JW Marriott -- all in Union Square. Out of all of them, this Marriott is my favorite (although the JW Marriott comes close). I'm sure there are other good options too, but I think it's hard to go wrong with this Marriott (and I'm usually not a Marriott fan!).

Bad Experience

July 23 2007: I don't know what started the bad experience here. We just hated it from the very beginning. I think it started with the HUGE crowd of people in the lobby. We felt like cattle being moved along.. but hey, if you get tired, there's a Starbucks in the lobby! Woohoo!

Anyway, there was nothing specifically awful about this stay.. it was just.. bad. Uninspiring, boring, and vanilla.

I'm sure they have tons of restaurants in the hotel so you don't have to walk a couple feet to the Metreon and eat at the other chains, but we didn't see them.

It was so bad that we actually used their internet (yes, that we paid for) to book another hotel room in the city for our weekend. Sometimes being tourists in your own city is NOT fun, and this was one of those times. We were embarrased for San Francisco.. and it was all the Marriott's fault. Please.. if you are coming to the city.. do NOT stay at this hotel.. there are MUCH better options out there for cheaper, and you won't feel like a cow.

Bed Score: 1.5 stars - our bed at home is much more comfortable.

Location. The Marriott San Francisco stands south of Market Street opposite the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Metreon Center in San Francisco, Calif. Powell Street transportation via the BART light rail system or via cable car is located within one block of the hotel. The Moscone Convention Center and the Museum of Modern Art are also positioned one block away.
Hotel Features. On site dining options include The Fourth Street Bar & Deli that serves casual American cuisine. The Garden Terrace highlights California style dishes.
