May 20 2008: Found a fantastic deal on Expedia to stay at the Fairmont in SF for spring break. Very accomodating - had a 21st floor room with views of the city, bay, etc. Beautiful renovated bathrooms and yummy toiletries. The furniture is a little tired in the rooms, but linens are lovely and soft. Service is good and location is perfect. Lots of conventions though....

June 22 2007: The Fairmont is a historic hotel right in the heart of Nob Hill. If you like beautiful ambience and a high level of service, and you are willing to pay for it, this is a great hotel.
Not a great hotel for business travellers (Internet access if $14 a day) and not nearly as cool/hip as more modern hotels (The W or the Clift for instance). This is definitely a hotel with an older, more classic vibe.

Location. Known as the "Queen of Nob Hill" and personifying the romantic appeal of the City by the Bay, The Fairmont San Francisco is positioned one half mile from the Financial District and Union Square's famed shops and irrepressible nightlife. This property stands at the only intersection where each of the cable car lines meet, and provides complimentary morning Town Car service to the Financial District. Hotel Features. Laurel Court boasts rare wines and French influenced cuisine. Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar offer Pacific Rim cuisine, tropical drinks, happy hours with full appetizer buffets and live bands performing on the pool's floating island. Caffe Centro serves lily coffee and Ghiradelli chocolates. Wireless Internet access is complimentary in public areas. On site shops provide a range of retail delights, from a jade gallery to a cigar store that stocks pre embargo Cuban cigars. The hotel's chief concierge, Tom Wolfe, is founder of the prestigious Les Clefs d'Or concierge association in the United States. Discounted access is available to the property's health club and fitness center that contains a sauna, steam rooms, cardiovascular equipment, and aerobics and yoga classes. Spa treatments include the Smoothing Body Polish, Swedish massage and Shiatsu.
Guestrooms. The 591 guestrooms at The Fairmont San Francisco are housed in the seven story main building and an attached 24 story tower. The hotel's rooms contain windows that open onto an inner rooftop courtyard. All accommodations include mahogany or ebonized wood furnishings, two poster beds and Asian antique reproductions. Rooms feature high ceilings, pale saffron walls and walk in closets. Rose marble bathrooms are stocked with Miller Harris toiletries. Bedding features include Italian Frette linens, down pillows and extra long mattresses. High speed Internet access is available for a fee.
Expert Tip. Known for its gilded ceilings and famous façade with supporting Corinthian marble columns, the hotel housed the former Venetian Room where Tony Bennett first crooned, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
