Moderately Priced Hotel on 32th and Madison
Modern, Classic, Cozy, Shopping, Sightseeing, Business People, Families, Tourists, Not Downtown, Not Luxurious
This is the first review written about this hotelMarch 9 2008: I booked this hotel because I was looking for an inexpensive place to stay in New York.  I work for a non profit so I always try to find a good deal.  The rate I got was $199/night which I thought was pretty decent for New York.

I was nervous about what I'd get for $199/night but I was actually pleasantly surprised.  The Vincci Avalon is on a junky street, but the lobby is nice and welcoming.  The staff was very friendly and could not have been more accomodating.  I arrived early and they made arrangements for me to get into a room immediately.

The main lobby was attractive and there was a computer for guests to use and free wi-fi in the rooms.   I could tell the age of the hotel once I hopped off the elevator and into the hallway.  It needs to be refurbished, but you get what you pay for.

This old and grubby feel stayed in the hallway and was not present in the room. My room was small, but all I needed.  The floors were 'hardwood' which I prefer to carpet.  The furnishings were simple due to the size of the room, but everything was clean and simple.  There was a really old T.V. and most of the amenities were not state of the art, but I'd rather pay less than have a flat screen T.V. that I wouldn't have watched anyway.

The bed didn't have fancy linens but was very comfortable.  My bathroom was sufficient, faux marble but very clean.  They also had a bathrobe and slippers which I thought was luxurious for a cheaper hotel.

The location was ok.  32nd and Madison is central, but really not located near anything.  I felt safe and could always catch a cab when I needed one.  I would have preferred to be more in mid-town.

The hotel had a breakfast buffet which was overpriced and nothing special, so I would skip it.

I also noticed that all the other guests were European and there were not many other American guests.  This could be because the dollar is so week, not sure.  Also, there were tons of families, so it appeared to be a family friendly hotel.

For $199/night, I was expecting a dump, which this hotel is not.  It was simple and clean and fit the bill.  I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a cheaper hotel but doesn't want to sacrifice cleanliness, safety or location.
