Sugar Beach Condo Resort

July 27 2007: Over the years I keep going back to Sugar Beach in St Croix. It's nowhere near as popular or populated as nearby St Thomas, but the island has its own charms and is really a diamond in the rough. The condos are a mixture of units rented out through the complex management while not in use by the owners and private residences. The furnishings are comfy and cozy (and chosen by the condo owners) and it's very homey. Condos on the lower floors open up directly onto the beach, while those on other floors provide decks looking out over the ocean. As the condos contain full kitchens, you are not dependent on local restaurants and free to make your own meals. There is a pool on the property built around the remnants of one of the old sugar mills and there are also tennis courts. The staff is happy to arrange transportation into Christiansted or the island's other city of Fredericksburg so one can easily see the island. It should also be noted that many merchants on the island will ask if you're from one of the cruise ships that docks at the island. Replying no that you're staying on the island, regardless of where, is usually enough for them to lower the prices on certain goods.
